In today's 4 for 4, I ask: "Can a Transformer really ever swap sides?", or will he always be that member of his former faction? IN particular we've had a some Decepticons swap sides, wether permanewnt, temporary, or just doing what's best for them at that point in time. In Beast Wars Dinobot defected to the Maximals Armada Starscream defected for a while, but are they defecting really or just waiting until the next better thing comes along?
I think in Energon (May be totally wrong here, mind is foggy), didn't the Decepticons after 10 years [since Armada series] work side by side with the Autobots, or was that just Tidal Wave? Can a bot really switch from one side to another?

I reckon some could, though others couldn't. As with people in real life, it depends totally on the individual. It might also depend on the circumstances of Transformers initiation. Did they join the faction because they feared death or rejection? Because they followed someone else into it or thought they agreed with it? Were they blackmailed? Did an unfortunate event or encounter affect their view of a faction? I also think that yes, in a way they will always be part of that faction as they've been exposed to it and lived within it. It's a very open question to ask, but one that I find interesting in terms of character development. Also, are you asking in terms of comics (which tend to have a sharper, more realistic edge to their stories) or cartoons (whose characters tend to be more clear cut)?

Tidalwave and Demolishor were both shown as working with the Autobots (but not particularly liking it). Demolishor did have a hard time about rejoining the Decepticons at first, but he eventually did and he became nothing more than a mindless follower again, really a waste of character progression there.
It is more of a case of the character (and the story writers). Dinobot's a good example as he struggled with this very question to himself in season 2. He ended up being a hero and chose to be a Maximal.
I'm fuzzy on Starscream's defection in Armada as it has been quite some time since I watched it.

IDW is handling Thundercracker's siding with the Autobots pretty well IMO.
But, I can never accept anyone trading sides and then going to fight along there new comrades. Based on trust factors and the most important, the amount of blood on their hands.
Plus IRL, usually anyone who switches sides has to give the side they're now with a ton of information and in return they are given a new life away from the military and government operations, never to be seen from again. I would imagine they rarely go back into the field again.

Interesting topic, Hoist! I haven't been keeping up with IDW TF--- what's going on with Thundercracker joining the Autobots?!

I love Thundercracker in the Ongoing comics. Pretty much he was left for dead after the events following All Hail Megatron and while waiting to reunite with the Decepticons he bunkered down and started watching TV. He started to understand humanity, or at least sympathies with Humanity. When he finally got saved by a rag tag group of Decepticons he found that he had no desire to be a part of any of this, even though he had the ability to lead them as he was a high ranking seeker after all. So he went back to watching TV and left the Decepticons to the devises of Swindle. Bumblebee eventually came to him to ask for his help with Menasor. He also helped them out with a conflict in Korea but I'm fuzzier on those details.
There might be stuff that happened before the ongoing series (and stuff I've not gotten to read yet because of not getting around to buying the newest volume) but that is the parts I've read.
