I found that in G1, at least in the show, we had a lot of duo team ups. Some of these team ups have carried on where you can't think of one without the other. This is totally from a random thought that got caught up in my head and then expanded. So here we go!
First let me set it up this way by first using Optimus Prime. He has a few friends that work off his wise, intelligent, patience personality. There are a few Autobots that have been paired up with the Autobot Leader.
Ironhide. Ironhide's gruff and grumpy personality works in contrast to Prime's patience and gentle giant persona. Where Ironhide is properly older, Prime is wiser. If it wasn't for Prime Ironhide would properly be knocking someone's head off all the time. This might be one of the best pairings in TF.
Jazz. Jazz's cool, carefree attitude is a contrast to Prime's personality but Jazz may be just as serious as Prime is when it comes to the Decepticons. Both are on the same page, Jazz is just way cooler.
Bumble Bee. There isn't much chemistry here but these two have been paired together from G1 to the movies to TF Prime at times. Personally I don't think they relate to each other much as they are so different. Its much like a child and an adult but not so much as father and son.
Prowl. Prowl might be as smart as Prime, more serious and focused, but he lacks compassion when compared to Prime. There isn't much happening here.
Grimlock. The boss Dinobot is almost everything Prime doesn't want to be when dealing with the Cons. But the chemistry is great. Basically this is where Prime's thoughtful actions and respect for life and others wins out over Grimlock's anger issues. Actually I think this relationship may have inspired Optimus Primal and Dinobot in Beast Wars, of course I don't really know.
Ratchet and Wheeljack. Both were teamed together in the show because they can fix things. They're real personalities weren't fully explored in the show, Ratchet didn't give Prime any backtalk like his tech spec says he does, pretty much making him the Doctor McCoy of the Autobots. And Wheeljack didn't almost blow himself up, at least I don't think so, correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while.... Anyways these two seemed to share a common bond when they needed to repair or invent things together.
Jazz and Prowl. These two have been put together in the show, the comic and later IDW comics. Properly because they are Prime's top ranking officers. The chemistry here works because they are so different. Jazz is street wise, cool and has a bag of tricks. Prowl is the straight man who is confused by Jazz. They could be partners in a cop show.
Jazz and Cliffjumper. This relationship seem to make it's mark with the 1986 movie. They pop up here and there online in images together, so I think it left a mark on fans. They also appeared working together in the Fall of Cybertron game. This relationship works because Jazz remains cool and tempers Cliffjumper's gung-ho attitude.
Bumble Bee and Spike. I think what works here is Bumble Bee isn't the biggest, meanest Autobot. He's gentle cause he knows what its like to get roughed up. And he's like a kid almost. And Spike is a teenager. So it's like they relate because they're youngsters yet are curious about each other due to the fact that one's a human and the other is a robot.
Bumble Bee and Brawn. Both are minibots so they relate this way. Difference is that Brawn can beat up anyone who makes fun of his height where Bee can't. Plus Bee is gentle and Brawn is rough. So this partnership works.
Sideswipe and Sunstreaker. Of course, the twins! Well one is likeable and the other is a sociopath! Sideswipe is actually the good looking Autobot here who's alternate was just as cool. Sunstreaker just wasn't as cool as his bro. As for persona, Sideswipe is like a surfer and Streaker is a snob. But both are down for jet-judo!
Hoist and Grapple. The show sort of had them as two bickering old men. And like Wheeljack and Ratchet, they were both put together as Autobots who fix and build things those they were is separate fields. I think this relationship works because who doesn't like to watch old men argue!
Blaster and Cosmos. In the show Blaster was as cool as Jazz (he was better in the Marvel comic, just saying). At times we saw Blaster as a passenger inside Cosmos when Cosmos was a UFO. (Had to word that sentence right). While not the most memorable team up, I think it works because Cosmos isn't as cool as Blaster and is way to awkward.
Warpath and Hoist. As I already stated, the show made Hoist an old man. I mean we all know they had him all wrong as he's more like a Timothy Dalton sounding Renegade Autobot in reality who could easily score his own movie in Hollywood! But put a trigger happy, insane in the brain Autobot like Warpath with him and you could make an Autobot version of the Lethal Weapon movies!
Megatron and Starscream. At last some Decepticon relationships! Wait, is that even possible? Anyways, Megatron, the ultimate mad mech who wants to control the universe. He has the know how and the drive to do it. He scares all who follow him to obey. Well Starscream is just the same except he doesn't scare anyone. This 'relationship' works because its fun to see them at odds all the time. In fact TF wouldn't be what it is today without Screamer. Lots of Decepticons want to be the boss but it's Starscream who is constantly out to get the crown in any series he pops up in.
Megatron and Soundwave. I think this partnership just works because each character's badassness (is that a word? If not it should be!) inspires more badassness. Perhaps its just the contrast there's personalities create.
Hot Rod and Kup. So I think this is obvious here. Hot Rod is a young, irresponsible punk and Kup is a bitter old man who is set on making Hot Rod do good. It works well, maybe too well that it might be boring.
Rodimus Prime and Ultra Magnus. Where Kup was trying to wrestle Hot Rod's impulses, Ultra Magnus is making sure Rodimus doesn't screw it up since Rodimus might have a position of power, he's unexperienced. This relationship works awesomely in the IDW comics.
Blurr and Wheelie. We saw a lot of them together in the 3rd season of the TF show. It seems to work because they are odd balls.
Cyclonus and Scourge. This relationship works because they both have to put up with Galvatron's madness. They properly wouldn't have anything to do with each other otherwise. Maybe I'm on to something here since one of them was actually a Seeker and the other an Insecticon before Unicron changed them. I've actually forgotten who was who in the debates.
Springer and Arcee. Well this works cause its a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, so to speak. Call it what you want, but if it was Arcee and Hot Rod that would be boring and I thin we'd all hate Hot Rod even more. I mean, if he got the girl and the Matrix, he'd be a biggest Mary Sue ever!
Kup and the Dinobots. I'm not mentioning actually teams or subgroups cause they're all forced together to be a team. Plus I don't find the relationship dynamics that interesting except where it's merge groups that hate each other. But Kup and the Dinobots is fun cause it makes Kup wish Hot Rod didn't become Rodimus, cause now he's stuck with the Dinobots who pester him for old stories. Then again maybe this relationship works cause the Dinobots are the only ones who listen to Kup...
That's it. If I have forgotten anyone or anything, let me know.
