This really inspired me to make a thread.
There's things I didn't know like later on another bot taking the Magnus role inside the armor, but it's still a fascinating concept. A re-used white version of optimus prime that combines with diaclone armor to become Ultra Magnus evoking fan theories for years, although as depicted above not realized in western media come scramble city,TFTM 86 film and marvel comics. I wasn't aware of the "Dion" theory.
So what do you like - brother or no brother? Or staight city commander/law enforcer? What do/did you think of the "latest in a line" of taken the Magnus name underneath the armor, and what are your favorite Magnuses (Magni?!)

I think the IDW version of Ultra Magnus is my favourite version. The Immortal Lawman. The original killed off fairly early in the war and others carrying on his name by basically cosplaying as him.
Never really thought much of the Dion theory, always thought the theory fit better for Ironhide, what with Pax and Dion being best buds.

I like the IDW, UK comic and TF Prime UM. Series, no nonsense. The 1986 movie gave made him a joke I found, at least around fans. As a City Commander I think he's wasted as a character.
I don't dig the white cab/robot version, it doesn't help make UM anything special. And as for a brother, pretty pointless I think since Prime is fairly serious himself. His RID version wasn't UM at all. Did like him there, but to be fair I didn't like RID.
I like the IDW take on UM. It's like UM is a Superhero, basically it's like the Dark Knight movies where Batman is a symbol.

Never really thought much of the Dion theory, always thought the theory fit better for Ironhide, what with Pax and Dion being best buds. I like the Ironhide theory! Would make a lot more sense. I personally din't have any opinion of the RID brother thing or the character, I just liked the toy and the combining with Prime to form Omega Prime, but I think it can be regarded as completely it's own entity. Like the video suggests the white Prime cab repaint as Magnus has been done to death in toy lines which didn't help matters, not did the DW when when that route. I prefer him as his own individual character whether that be lawman or city commander, I quite like the idea of slightly gruffer Magnus being other bots that have took the name, secretly taking his place underneath the armor. This morning I had remembered something like that I had written as an idea once, only a very specific person being underneath the armor. (Basically for a megaverse idea) From my workshop forum in 2014: (Specifically idea #3) {SPOILER - Click to view} Plot device: Who is Ultra Magnus? Setting: The Last days of the first Cybertronian war. What I want: To do something original with Ultra Magnus I came up with various ideas about who Magnus was underneath the armor. I didn't want to do anything that had been done like making him Prime's brother and I didn't want him to be a clone (Trying to explain the "White Prime" underneath the armor and the toy.) so started to think of a number of ideas. - Idea #1 - Magnus is Prime! - Let's face facts, the only time you see them together in the movie is at Prime's death bed. One alternate idea however was using some of the comic's influence. Optimus is being hunted by the Predacons on Earth, and has to know whether the Autobots could cope without him. So Prime creates a duplicate of himself, which is what the Autobots see - thinking Prime is Dead, torn to pieces by the predacons yadda, yadda, yadda. Real Prime goes to Cybertron.
In my version he has to go into hiding as he is thought to be dead so uses some Cybertronian armor and takes control of the wreckers yadda, yadda, yadda. - Idea #2 - Although the above idea fell to the wayside, I liked the idea of making it gritty and someone having to hide their identity my first thought was "The Last Autobot" or one of the thirteen Primes. This was risque/controversial as it would make Ultra Magnus one of the thirteen. Although not as it was one of the thirteen inside armor not a Ultra Magnus in his own right as a character.
- Idea #3 - Whilst researching the 13 Primes and trying to pick one, my attention was drawn to Prime Nova/Nova Prime/Prima I.E. the first Transformer ever created by Primus. Going back to idea #2 this would make even more sense with a character going into hiding, rather than the last Autobot, the very first Transformer, thus he must be protected at any cost! After getting this idea I began getting a "reveal" for this idea strongly forming in my head and could see how it plays out. IN this mythos, there aren't many of the High Council left so when they meet it's always in different places as nowhere is safe any more. For their safety it has to be in secret.
The last days of the first Cybertronian war, and only a few members of the council remain, three in total. Once again they meet to hold court in secret, never in one location for fear of their lives and the safety of the Autobot empire. In dark burnt out buildings only two members show.
Tomaandi: So it is decided?
Emirate Xaaron: It must be done
Tomaandi: And what of our client?
Emirate Xaaron: He is safe, and that is all that is needed to be known.
Tomaadi: Permit me, but where is he?
Emirate Xaaron: It is not safe for me to be able to give that information. We can trust no one. Right now anyone can be listening, or monitoring us, spies are everywhere and we can trust noone but ourselves.
Tomaadi: But- he can't be allowed to just freely travel around Cybertron! The moment he is spotted he'll be canon fodder! A V.I.P. hit! Every Decepticon and their allies will hunt him down and single him out for execution, he might as well have a big target painted on his back!
Emirate Xaaron:: He will not be recognized! Yet he will walk among us, be one of us.. A God among many, but like any other soldier..
Footsteps are heard down the temporary Autobot headquarters, coming into view we see feet, walking. Blue feet, large with white acents on top of the ball of the foot indicating this bot is very large in height or bulk.
Tomaadi: He won't be any other soldier!
Emirate Xaaron: He will not be recognized! He will have a new identity and Cybertronian armor, with any sense he'll fuse it to his body. It will protect him, but not only that it will keep him alive..
Down the dimly lit corridors the silhouette of an Autobot officer proceeds down the corridor, indeed he is a large, tall and stocky bot. The foot-falls echo and ring out down the deserted corridors before activating a panel on one of the doors down that section and after the doors slide open, disappearing inside.
Emirate Xaaron: He must not be recognized. He must never be recognized nor his true identity ever be revealed...
In the darkness of the room, the Autobot opens up a chest plate over his main body, slowly as it lifts up, the entire chest section underneath drops down, a shaft of light would reveal redness to the chest. With the chest cavity exposed the Autobot inside is able to step down from his armor, leaving it where it stands and a much smaller bot emerges but still with the head of the existing body. The Autobot notices a reflection from a glint of like on a shiny reflective surface and for the first time in ages catches a glimpse of himself. Slowly the Autobot reaches up to the back of his head and undoes dome clasps and begins to lift, the head moving slowly up revealing it to be a blue armor helmet with false optic lenses covering his true eyes.
Emirate Xaaron: No one must ever know
The Autobot lifts the piece of armor, cradeling it under one arm as the Blue, white and red armor suit stands in the background he looks at his reflection...
Emirate Xaaron: The First Transformer ever created! Lives...

Uk comic version all the way for me. Getting smacked down by Galvatron but also kicking ass. The IDW version is an interesting take.
The DW brother nonesense is not for me. Even if it kind of works for the toy.
