As part of the 40th Anniversary of Transformers, this also marks the 20th year anniversary of the Transformers energon show and it's toy's, a follow up sequel to the succesful Armada line.
At the time although the Energon line was marking 20 years of Transformners, according to Aaron Archer in a recent podcast it was never much a consideration. Although it did lead to many toys and characters being more overt homages to major characters from Generation 1, these homages did have a tendency to get garbled, though, due to different names or significantly altered characterization. It also introduced a new way of play with two Transformers super-linking together to make one figure although this was less of an overall toy selling point than mybe it should have been.
What where your thoughts on the Energon line and it's toy's?
The ideas of add ond like Mini-cons was drastically scaled back. At the smallest price-point, the Omnicons and Terrorcons augment the larger toys with add on translucents energon weapons and "power-ups". I personally liked these with my favourites being Battle Ravage and Divebomb on the Decepticon side (There was also Cruellock), and on the Autobot side I liked Strongarm and Signal Flare among my favourites.
Some of my favourites in this line was Energon Megatron who was a nice white space jet and Enegon Scorponok. Due to the show I particarly liked Energon Scorponok and was destined to get it as I liked it as soon as I saw the character in the show, similar with Energon Starscream, although I got my energon screamer of HeavyAssault but did like that mold of the character, which I think was actually a remold of an older figure/re-use.
I was definetly drawn more to the Decepticon side toy wise with this line. The Optimus, ironhide and Hot Shot didn't really didn't do anything for me (As Armada Hot Shot didn't) and Optimus with the 4 add on combiner arm/leg vehicles was a big no for me. Not helping that the fandom dubbed pre-combiner Optimus "fattimus Prime) due to his big waist line.
