I never bought into this "facebook/social sites" are killing message boards stuff before until now.
Another great small independant TF site TCA (The Cybertron Archive) is shutting it's doors after 15 years. Much like us, it was one of the goods ones because it was smaller, independant and hadn't got up it's own back-side like other global mainstream TF sites, with a close and friendly community. Sadly it does seem more and more that people do not want to "talk" on message boards just "like" stuff on facebook/other social sites. More and more small time TF sites are shutting, TF @ The Moon is practically dead with reduced forums.
It does look like only the big global TF sites are going to be left, and I've never found their forums that friendly. Either that or they always argue amongst themselves or you get put down for having a different opinion. Which is why I've always preffered the smaller independant sites.
Are sites like us becoming a thing of the past?

No way! Maybe you're right, maybe the social networks and bigger sites will make it harder for people like us, but the way I see it is like Tesco- it may sell everything, but you still get little coffee shops and cafes. Because people don't like to shop around- they like to know where they are with something and stick to it. People will keep coming here for their coffee, and they'll stay for the conversation. I guarantee it

Never thought of this at all, but I have seen TF sites getting smaller and slower.
I guess FB is making us lazier, but just thinking about it now, it could be a generation thing. Younger members have so much to dazzle themselves with, quick online communication, video games, and and of course FB. The older generation that did post on message boards are properly sick of it now or have out grown it.

It's not that the bigger sites are unfriendly, it's just that it's easy to get lost in. Too easy to ghost.
I agree with Neo. You just can't get the same sort of company, conversation, history and well thought out responses at the large "social sites". They're all about the instant. Not saying they're bad, but they have their place, just as places like TTF have theirs. C:

Its one thing to click on a 'like' button, but its something completely different to take part in a conversation. That's what I love about this place, quite often the simplest of things can get a good string of posts going. The smaller sites all have a close-knit relationship, which is good and bad. The only downside of it is when a new member joins, sometimes they may feel that they can't really join in. I will admit, I kinda felt that way when I first arrived here, but then I joined in with the movie RP and shortly after took part in the chatroom, and three years later, I'm still here.

Only reason I get on facebook is to talk to old friends I haven't seen in years. Other than that I come here to talk about Transformers.

It's not that the bigger sites are unfriendly, it's just that it's easy to get lost in. Too easy to ghost. Maybe not unfriendy, but unruley. Too many attitudes on their forums I've found in the past. Too many "attacking" of others just because their opinion might be different, and lax with the staff when it comes to rules. Things may have changed in the last several years(?), who knows, but they don't exactly make the forums of those sites feek inviting. How can they feel they can't join in though? That's the question. Look at the responses new members get when they post a welcome topic. Theres also currenly 5,143 topics at hand with almost 99, 000 posts. What could be done to make it less scary? More forum games? Most of them run dry in the end getting very little responses or just.. stop, and die. I dunno. One mis-conception is "cliques". Just because a bunch of people get one well doesn't mean it's a "clique"

I think Neo is right, we do come here for the conversation and stay for the company. I know when I come here, I feel like I'm with good friends and can talk about everything and nearly anything.

Twitter and Facebook are indeed killing off forums. I shut down the forums at my site a while back. TTF needs to be here because when I decide to visit I need to know you guys are here for me.

Almost 10 years X-Bot and still going strong! As it says on the welcome table I think now, we are the longest running TF forum on ProBoards. XD

10 years. Wow!
I remember getting us super early to post in the RPGs that I was running. A few hours before work, no better way to start the day!

We did have a special code to fix join dates that are wrong or if someone left and re-joined later. I'll check - but it should still be on the forum, if it is I'll add your name to it XD.
