So last night I was watching this program - "Michael Jackson's Bad 25", 25 years of the bad album basically. Whether you like or dislike him as a person, you can't fault the music and I wanted to share that here and what I guess, meant to me. The phrase "A piece of my childhood died" is always knocked around and for me I guess the news of his death was that piece. I was too in shock to realise at the time. It's not just the dancing either, but the songs themselves, the songwriting, the talent, from a very early age.
As a kid I had the BAD album on record (Showing my age there!), I absolutely loved the title and the video to the title track. I was aware of a few of the thriller songs of course by then - Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean - the big ones, you couldn't not know them. I even had my own moves for "Smooth Criminal" - one of my favourites also from the album. (In the privacy of my own bedroom of course! It also helped to partially mask away some of the insecurities I had at the time from school, who I was, being bullied etc.) Suffice to say my favouries from the BAD album were: Bad Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, Leave Me Alone, Man In The Mirror and The Way You Make Me Feel. (To a lesser extent Speed Demon). Come the 90's I was still a fan after a decade, but Dangerous didn't make as much impact as past albums, it was really only Black Or White and to a LOT lesser extent Remember The Time that really got me. (Later as an adult Gone Too Soon). With HIStory it was the beginning of the end, although I liked Earth Song, any new songs weren't on par, but it was nice to have the old songs on that massive double album. I personally feel musically his music never got back up to the all time high ever again. I was disappointed with Blood On The Dancefloor - massively.
As an adult, when I started buying music for myself - records and by then CD's, I really began to appreciate music even more. I became a huge fan of his back catalogue with Thriller, Of The Wall, The Jacksons/Jackson 5, Motown era, especially Jackson 5. I really like his solo Motown era as well, I have the Music And Me album on tape where he sings the classics like Rockin' Robin and Ain't No Sunshine, (The latter being my favourite version of theat song), but amazing vocals on songs like the title track Music And Me and With A Child's Heart. I also have on tape, the lesser known Farewell My Summer Love albulm with great songs like Don't Let It Get You Down, Melody (fave), You've Really Got A Hold On Me and the title song Farewell My Summer Love. My favourite though is To Make My Father Proud, which I first liked because it's just a beautiful song, but became a lot more relevant and important to me after my own father died. I also have of course on record Various Jackson 5 /The Jacksons/Michael Jackson records and compilations.
So yes, as corny as it is, when he died a little piece of me died as well, there I said it. Going back to the start, whatever you thought of him you can't fault the music, the inspiration and the sheer talent.
I just finally bought BAD on Amazon.mp3, and it's worthe very bit of money.
So anyone want to talk Michael Jackson songs?
