Just read that Ray Harryhausen died today. Known mostly for 1963's Jason and the Argonauts, his animated scenes although perhaps dated now, were phenomenal for their time! For me the I noticed because of the Sinbad movies and mainly my fave, Clash Of The Titans. Harryhausen also worked on such films as Mighty Joe Young, It Came From the Sea, 20 Million Miles to Earth, Mysterious Island, One Million Years BC, The Valley of Gwangi and Clash of the Titans. Looking back at films like Clash of the Titans and the Sinbad movies, Ray Harryhausen's SFX are still pretty damn impressive. I've seen plenty of films in the last 10 years where the effects aren't nearly as good. These days, anyone with a computer and the right software can animate something, but using stop-motion and splicing it together with live-action is an art. I've always been a fan of 'real' SFX as opposed to CGI, the majority of the time it looks much better.
There are a lot of SFX artists out there who wouldn't be working now if they hadn't seen some of Harryhausen's work.

*Stuffs my inner film geek back in his box* let it out BB, let it out! It's true though, without him there wouldn't have been some of the SFX people I admire - Rick Baker (An American Werewolf In London), Stan Winston (Terminator films, Batman films, countless others), the list goes on!

Watched Clash of the Titans when I was tiny and I remember being so terrified by Medusa... really flared my imagination, though. Guess I have good ol' Harryhausen to thank for that ... Rest in Peace
