Okay I looked back as far as Aug 2006 and couldn't find a thread like this, although I'm sure I've done this before. What are the origins of your display name?
For some it might be as simple as a favorite character but others have quite unique display names.
Mine isn't as straight forward as it would seem. If you know me by now, you'll know that Grimlock is my favorite character - always has been; always will be. Not Hoist. So why did I take his character's name? I think I've told this before but I'll keep it current for newcomers and it's always good to refresh these things for those that don't know.
So skip back to 1984 onwards when I was crazy for the G1 cartoons, very early on a Saturday morning. Cartoons which led to me buying the UK Marvel run of the comic and want the toys. When I was 5/6 years old my parents divorced, as a result my early TF collection was just minibots, whilst friends had the cool ones Like Optimus, Megatron, the seekers, mirage etc. We couldn't afford much so I just made do with the mini bots. Since the divorce I had become estranged to my father, (He lived in the same town still, but I had resentment issues towards him not being there for me/a father figure - long story.) however; either one Christmas or birthday he bought me Hoist and I cherished it!
Not because of the character, who was only background in both comic and cartoons, but because he was my first "full sized" figure like Sideswipe, Prowl etc. What we would call a deluxe today I guess. It was because of that reason I cherished him, with my fondest memory being sat behind the sofa after I got him; applying the stickers/decals and playing with him. At the time it was the one thing my father did right for me. Skip ahead to 2001 when I first got online and by then I had been having recurring dreams in my late teens/early 20's about the old Transformer comics. When I was deemed "too old for them" I had been forced to give up my toys, beloved Transformers, matchbox cars, star wars stuff, lego, and TF comics. So Over the years I had kept Transformers in mind and ended up dreaming about the comics. Dreaming about finding back copies in newsagents, feeling the touch of the paper and the print again. So when I first got online, the first thing I did was look for Transformers sites.
I found this great site called transfans.net (As it was back then) and spent hours reading comics and eventually joined the forum as HoistKeeper. I can't even remember why I chose that name. The obvious choice was Hoist due to my cherished love of that toy I had, but the "Keeper"? I don't know. Later in life I've reasoned maybe it was the "Keeper of Hoist" - his toy, or the memory of the toy I had? Who knows. Obviously this was shortened over the years, but that is why I chose Hoist, because of that toy I had and those cherished memories, and nothing to do with the character or being my favorite Transformer. In fact in terms of G1 favorite characters it was Grimlock and Sideswipe on the Autobots, Starscream on the Decepticons side.
So there is my little story about why I became "Hoist" and took his name. What's the background to your display name?
