I don't think your reasoning for no story continuing after FoC makes sense. Activision had Edge of Reality and WayForward do Rise of the Dark Spark, using some of what High Moon developed for the two Transformers game they had made. Say what you will about ROTDS and I'll properly agree, bad story, bad graphics, bad AI, bad handling, etc, etc. But regardless of High Moon's involvement, Activision has allowed another video game developer to make a Transformers game using what High Moon came up with. Like how the Batman Arkham series had Warner Bros. Games Montréal do Arkham Origins in-between Rocksteady Studios' Arkham City and Arkham Knight. Origins was a prequel to the whole series and ROTDS was a prequel to FoC. Perhaps the developers of ROTDS got the idea of a prequel from there or maybe not, its not that important, point being, Origins didn't tread on what happened after Arkham City allowing Rocksteady to make Arkham Knight and have it come after Arkham City. Maybe it was to give Rocksteady time to make Arkham Knight, I don't know but that's not important. So even if High Moon never makes another Transformers game, there is still space after FoC for a game developer to continue the story in a new game. I've seen the sales for FoC and yes they're bad so I'm not surprised we haven't seen a continuation yet and I wouldn't be surprised if we never one based on the sales. After ROTDS I had my doubts we see TF games that weren't based on the movies all together. But did anyone really see a G1 game coming? I think it's reasonable that if you asked anyone if we'd be seeing a Transformers game based on the classic cartoon series of the 80s this year before those images were leaked the answer would of been no. And look how wrong that answer would of been. So I don't think it's that far fetched that a possible continuation of some sort could happen for WFC/FoC. The game could be completely different, the game could be done by someone else, the continuation might happen years down the road. The sales of Transformers Devastation could help make it a reality and even influence other TF games or we'll just see more games like TFD in the future rather then WFC/FoC due to the sales of TFD. My point is the G1 game that some fans thought that they would never see is here so I don't think it's that unrealistic of far fetched for the continuation of WFC/FoC to one day happen after all there is a big space after FoC that the story of ROTDS didn't take up.
And Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance had a DLC. You could download different armour for Raiden and some of them had unique properties.

ROTDS was the result of Activision needing to put out a Transformers game to capitalize on AoE, using assets from the fan favorite WFC/FoC games to try to increase sales.
I'd agree with you, if it were any company but Activision, that there is always a chance. Platinum's game is more than likely the result of Platinum having the idea and pitching it to Activion given they hold the rights to the video game license, and not Activision looking to do something with the license. However, while Platinum is well known and has a cult following, they never sell the numbers that most major publishers are looking for (hence why their games bounce around from publisher to publisher all the time). Activision is known as one of the most egregious publishers for killing off franchises and developers because they don't sell like Call of Duty. They see Destiny as having lackluster sales and reviews and it is a gaming phenomenon right now. I don't look for Platinum's game to meet Activision criteria of a hit, though I expect it will be fun. Platinum just doesn't pull in that big a crowd.
As for the MGR:R dlc, I wasn't aware. I bought it on PC and is has no DLC listed. But, I do think they just released Bayonetta 2 outfits for the game on WiiU, so there is a chance for pallet swaps I suppose.

In this interview at about 6:40 the producer from Activision states that Activision wanted to get the balling rolling on a new TF game and then they approached Platinum Game who said they would do it.
As for why ROTDS became a reality wasn't my point, point was the mechanics created by High Moon, or who ever High Moon used/hired to co-create the mechanics, graphics, characters and etc, were passed on to another developer.
In some of the interviews I've read and watched, there was mention of Platinum's Metal Gear Solid Revengeance being similar to what TFD will be. I decided to check out the demo, now I want that game too.

A lot of their games are those high action, DMC styled games. They are definitely fun. Hopefully it works well with Transformers. What I've seen so far looks great.

While I'm still sort of on the fence about this game, I think it's format makes sense. Meaning that it's something of a throw back brawler you'd find in an arcade game. And considering Transformers began in the 80s and if video game technology back then was as good as it is now, we would of gotten something like this along those lines.
Or like this!
EDIT :: As I was going though some articles this morning, I remembered that Rise of the Dark Spark ended with a shot of G1 Optimus Prime. And we see OP from the G1 continuity watching the Dark Spark fall to Earth. Interesting that they ended the game with a G1 version of OP and then we get a G1 inspired TF game. Possible tie-in? Properly not. Coincidence? Properly, unless the force that changing the earth in to a cybertron-like planet in TFD is the dark spark? Sometimes the stuff my mind comes up with scares me.

Very pleased to see the likes of Sideswipe and Starscream in there! Of course Grimlock too who fas fighting an Insecticon! Also saw Thundercracker in there in Thundercracker colors, not one of the genetic seeker/car baddies which is great, gives more hope for the con side of things, especially with Shockwave in the mix.

Awesome! I like the Nemesis Prime and Goldfire skins. Did Hasbro lose the rights to Goldbug or something? They have always been good for losing the rights to character names.

Yeah, I guess they did. Unless Goldfire is another version of the Goldbug character?
