In his final act, the fake Optimus Prime gave the ship route of the Autobot shuttle making the run to Autobot city on Earth for Energon, so that the Decepticon could store away on it and by pass Autobot security. As an incentive, the Fake Optimus Prime orders Ironhide, Ratchet, Prowl and Brawn on to the shuttle, the heart of the morale among the Autobot warriors being some of the toughest Autobots in the Autobot army, as well as the top ranking. (Ironhide, Ratchet, Prowl). All are killed by Megatron on route. Freed from his imprisonment, Optimus rushes to stop the Fake Optimus Prime and is takes him out, before rushing to Earth to stop Megatron's assault on Autobot city. In the struggle to stop Megatron once and for all Prime dies and Megatron is reformatted into Galvatron by the giant planet-eater Unicron who threatens Earth and Cybertron as we know it, eventually defeated by the new leader Rodimus Prime.
During the battle for Autobot City, the "Renegade Autobots"; had remained outlaws on Cybertron for treason and mutiny, the secret of the duplicate "Prime" dying with Optimus on Autobot city, Earth in 2005. Meeting after meeting took place at the High Council between Autobot elders and the Autobot senate about how to deal with these rogue Autobots. Seeking council from Along with Rodimus Prime, now at home on Cybertron it was deemed they were to be rounded up, preferably alive, to pay for their crimes. To greater their threat and swifter capture, they were framed with multiple crimes and were made the easy scapegoats. When Rodimus Prime took command of the Autobots, he sought out the Renegades and was determined to bring them in, but as his time was divided on/off Cybertron he delegated to the likes of Ultra Magnus, Jetfire and Perceptor.
With Rodimus Prime splitting his time between Earth and Cybertron (Marvel) he places Maximus Convoy in charge of Cybertronian matters as most of the top brass in the Autobot ranks were killed in the great Battle with Unicron. Rodimus Prime struggles with leadership and following in the foot-falls of the great Optimus Prime. With time-hopping Galvatrons as well as visits from death's Head the Peace and Harmony years didn't last long either on Earth or Cybertron. Added to which, a price was put on the "Renegade Autobot's" heads for their capture. With Rodimus Prime splitting his time between Earth and Cybertron (Marvel) Rodimus places Maximus Convoy in charge of Cybertronian matters and puts his trust in a young commander Maximus Convoy takes the Renegade Autobots of Cybertron. The war spreads to the peaceful planet of Nebulos. After an initial visit by the Autobots, a blunder led to the severe mistrust of the Transformers by the Nebulons who did not believe they were sentient - just mindless war machines created by their enemies. The only way the Autobots could gain their trust was to surrender their weapons, several Nebulons became permanently bonded with a Transformers exo-skeleton and became their new weapons thus the new targetmasters were born. During this time the Nebulons harbored a dark secret as to why they were able to accomplish such a feat. The stasis pod of Optimus Prime had crashed-landed on their planet, over time they had their top scientists and engineers working on him but despite the repairs and modifications, still couldn't get him to function. Now becoming target masters it began to help them try and understand Cybertron technology more, however, the untimely arrival of the Decepticons however put things on hold as the new targetmasters now not only had to protect their city, but their fallen Autobot leader. Over time they drew to a stale-mate, the new Autobot weapons were too powerful for the Decepticons.
With the ever growing destruction of Nebulons cities, some of the more desperate citizens of Nebulos realized they had to stop this war and tried to make a deal with the Decepticons, sharing the targetmaster process with Scorponok and co. As these tide of events turned the Autobots contacted Rodimus about Prime. Along with Fortress Maximus, Kup and co they headed to Nebulos. The Decepticons were against the Nebulons becoming their weapons however and were against them having direct control over their firepower. Instead in order to ensue peace some of Nebulos' greatest scholars offered to share their knowledge with the Decepticons and instead of binary suits to change into weapons became the Decepticons new heads as Headmasters. In their eyes if they couldn't have control over their weapons, they could control their minds and have power over the Decepticons actions and put an end to this bitter war and destruction. As the war raged on however, Rodimus knew the only way to bring Optimus Prime back was to relinquish the Creation Matrix. Once again the Autobot leader lived, (Now Powermaster Prime); forcing the Decepticons into surrender, for now. Rodimus meanwhile reverted to Hot Rod and became a Targetmaster. When Optimus Prime did return to Cybertron it was felt that finally the tide of the war may be turned.
With Decepticon activity growing, the Autobots still need ground troops and as many numbers as they can muster, thus Maximus Convoy returns to Cybertron with the fugitive "Renegade Autobots. Hot Rod tries to convince PM Optimus Prime of the allegations against these "Renegades" and what he believes to be true but is stunned when he finds out that after being away for space for so long, Maximus Convoy believes the "Renegades" are telling the truth. Optimus tells Hot Rod those Autobots were not traitors but doing what they felt was right when Megatron used a Diaclone repline of Prime to infiltrate the Autobots, even if at times their actions and the way they went about it may not be seen as morally right.
The Renegades meanwhile also begin to recruit new members as as the mercenaries Morpher and Sharpshot. During these years the young and talented Autobot commander - Maximus Convoy, quickly climbs the ranks becoming a general, Maximus Convoy has the heart of a warrior despite his academic background and the ability to lead and rally Autobots. Optimus sees a young self in Maximus and has future leadership materials, with this trust Optimus begins to confide in Maximus more, who in turn over time learns of how Optimus returned from Nebulos and how he was captured and the diaclone was put in his place right up until the battle of Autobot city in 2005. Maximus is determined to help Optimus and ensure that the Renegades are proved innocent.

With Springer and (Targetmaster) Kup returning to the Wreckers, Hot Rod remained as intergalactic Ambassador, and - under the cloud of hisless than sucessful leadership; returns to Nebulon as protector and guardian of the planet.
